Gwinn woman charged in train-car crash

MARQUETTE, MI--   Police have released the name of the driver arrested after her car was hit by a train in Little Lake last Thursday evening.

Samantha Jo French, 24, of Gwinn is charged with two counts of operating while intoxicated, causing serious injury and one count of possession of marijuana.

Police say French was the driver of a car containing another adult and two children that failed to stop at the railroad crossing and pulled in front of a train.  Three people were trapped in the vehicle after the crash.  All were taken to Marquette General Hospital, where one child was placed in the Intensive Care Unit.

French remains jailed on a $305,000 bond.  A preliminary hearing is set for April 10.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
