Boy tortured in Escanaba

ESCANABA, MI--   Two Escanaba residents have been arrested for torturing a 15-year-old boy.

Escanaba Public Safety officers were dispatched to the

1500 block of North 20th Street Friday around 4 p.m. to conduct a welfare check on the teen.  They spoke with his mother, Susan Bardo, 46, and her boyfriend, Carl Pellinen, 47.  Officers discovered the boy had been staying in an 8- by 10-foot upstairs room lined with tarps.

The boy was brought to Public Safety and interviewed about his living conditions, then taken to OSF St. Francis Hospital for medical evaluation.

Search warrants were executed on the residence.  Evidence recovered led to Bardo and Pellinen’s arrest for first-degree child abuse, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, and torture.

They remain lodged in the Delta County Jail, each on a $50,000 cash bond.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
