Jail inmate walks away

MANISTIQUE, MI--   Officials have recaptured a man who walked away from the Schoolcraft County Jail.

Monday night the 25-year-old was granted release to attend counseling at a Manistique church, but he never showed up. 

The Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Department initiated a search with the assistance of Michigan State Police, Manistique Public Safety, and Sault Ste. Marie Tribal Police.  The man was found around 10 p.m. Monday night in a parking lot on the western side of Manistique.

The man’s name has not been released.  Officials say he was classified as minimum security.

The incident remains under investigation. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
