Iron County inmate tries to swim away from deputies

CRYSTAL FALLS, MI--   An Iron County inmate who escaped from custody has been recaptured and returned to jail.

Officials say the 22-year-old Iron River man had been transported to North Star Hospital Tuesday for medical attention when he escaped deputies and fled on foot.  The suspect sprinted to Ice Lake and tried to swim away, but swam back to shore and ran off.

Deputies, Michigan State Police troopers, and a State Police Canine Unit initiated a search for the suspect.  He was found about an hour later lying down in tall brush a short distance from where he was last seen and apprehended without further incident.

The unidentified suspect awaits arraignment in Iron County District Court on a charge of escaping lawful custody.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
