Ishpeming man charged with accosting a child

ISHPEMING, MI--   An Ishpeming man has been arrested for sexually assaulting a child.  

City Police say John Wayne Mathews, 44, of North Street was taken into custody August 9 after an investigation.  He’s charged with accosting a child for immoral purposes and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, which involves a victim between the age of 13 and 16. 

Mathews faces up to six years in prison and a $4,500 fine.  He remains lodged in the Marquette County Jail on a $200,000 cash bond. 

A preliminary exam is set for August 20 in 96th District Court in Ishpeming. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
