High-speed chase in Baraga hurts officer

BARAGA, MI--   An officer with the Keweenaw Bay Tribal Police has been hurt in a high-speed chase in Baraga.

Village Police say the incident began early Thursday morning in Baraga.  They say the suspect vehicle reached speeds in excess of 90 miles per hour as it headed toward the Baraga Plains.

During the chase patrol cars were damaged by the suspect’s vehicle and a tribal officer sustained injuries.  The officer was treated at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

The suspect was eventually stopped and taken into custody.  His name will be released following his arraignment on charges.

Police say alcohol seems to be a factor in the incident, which remains under investigation.

The Baraga County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
