Man charged with keeping money meant for charity

ISHPEMING, MI--   An Ishpeming man has been arrested for running a charity scam.

Scott Edward Martin, 40, is accused of making T-shirts to honor 13-year-old Christopher “Bubba” Croley, who was killed in a Wisconsin crash caused by a drunk driver in October of 2012.  Martin charged $15 for the shirt.  He said $10 of each purchase would go to the Croley family.  The family says they never received the cash.

Martin is charged with violation of the state Charitable Solicitation Act—a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

Martin posted a $500 bond.  He faces a preliminary exam March 18 in Ishpeming District Court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
