CA woman no longer a MI fugitive

clickondetroit.com

DETROIT, MI (AP)--   Michigan prison officials were excited in February when they said they tracked down a fugitive in San Diego. But it turns out that the capture was based on incomplete information.

Jamie Lewis was released Friday after more than a month in jail in California. She won't be returning to a Michigan prison where she was known as Judy Hayman in the 1970s.

Lewis was arrested in San Diego in February, 37 years after she escaped while serving a sentence for attempting to steal women's clothes.

Her attorney has said Lewis returned to Michigan in 1982 and was excused from serving any additional prison time for the attempted theft. Corrections Department spokesman Russ Marlan says none of that information was in her file in Michigan.
