Details of Ironwood murder-suicide emerge

IRONWOOD, MI--   Ironwood Public Safety officials have released more information regarding a murder-suicide in the city.

Officers responded to 88 Burt Street Monday morning and found David Mukavitz, 83, and his wife Connie, 77, dead of gunshot wounds.  They say it appears David Mukavitz shot his wife, then himself.

KBJR-TV from Superior, Wisconsin reports Connie was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and her husband had terminal cancer.  The report indicates friends of the Mukavitz’s are describing it as a mercy killing.

Ironwood Public Safety is being assisted in the investigation by the Michigan State Police Crime Lab and troopers, the Gogebic County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Gogebic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
