Former mayor charged with taking money in Delta County

ESCANABA, MI--   A former official with the city of Escanaba has been arrested on embezzlement charges.

Leo Evans, 58,—once a member of the City Council and mayor—is accused of taking thousands of dollars from the Escanaba Eagles Club. 

He resigned from the city council in April. 

Evans was arraigned Monday on a charge of embezzlement of $100,000 or more, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.  He was released on bond pending future court dates.

State Police from the Iron Mountain Post investigated the incident and were assisted by detectives from the Gladstone Post. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
