Suspected drunk driver crashes car containing kids

HOUGHTON, MI--   A Houghton woman has been arrested after she crashed a vehicle with her two children inside.

Troopers from the Calumet Post say Friday around 10:40 p.m. a passerby came upon a vehicle that was upside-down on Airport Road near M-26.  The witness said a young child was walking around outside the car and a baby strapped in a car seat was screaming inside the vehicle.  The passerby crawled into the vehicle and removed the baby, while the driver crawled out on her own.

Troopers took the 34-year-old driver to U.P. Health System Portage for treatment, then lodged her at the Houghton County Jail for operating while impaired/alcohol, child endangerment, and possession of marijuana.

The children were released to a family member after they were treated at the scene.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
