SWAT team arrests suicidal Wakefield man

UPDATE:  The man has been identified as 30-year-old Tony Compton.

WAKEFIELD, MI--   A SWAT team was called to Wakefield Saturday in response to a suicidal man in a house with his three-year-old son.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department says Saturday around 8 p.m. officers were able to make contact with the 30-year-old man, who refused to leave the house and threatened to shoot officers on scene.

The Gogebic/Iron Area SWAT Team was activated and deputies requested assistance from the Michigan Department of Corrections Emergency Response Team.  Neighboring homes and businesses were evacuated.

A short time later the suspect released the child but went back into the house.  Around 10 p.m. SWAT personnel took him into custody as he exited the residence.

The man is charged with four counts of resisting-obstructing an officer and one count of second-degree child abuse.  He remains lodged in the Gogebic County Jail on a $50,000 bond, pending arraignment.
