Michigan Rep. arrested for DUI

MARQUETTE, MI--   State Representative John Kivela has been arrested for drunken driving.

In a statement the Marquette Democrat said Monday night he was arrested for driving under the influence just outside Lansing.

“I am truly sorry to my wife, family, and constituents for letting them down,” the statement read.  “I have battled with alcoholism for most of my adult life. My dependence on alcohol has become a problem, and I plan to seek treatment immediately.”

Kivela serves the 109th District.  The former mayor of Marquette was elected to the House in 2012.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
