Man arrested for using fake name to defraud women

CHEBOYGAN, MI--   A downstate man has been arrested for scamming women out of money.

James Max Hughes, 38, of Mancelona was arrested Wednesday on fraud and larceny charges by State Police from the St. Ignace post.  He’s accused of meeting women on an online dating site using a false name, gaining their trust, and getting money from them.  Police say he secured private loans, vehicles, and other goods and services from people using the fake identity.  He allegedly committed the crimes in Northern Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.

Hughes is lodged in the Cheboygan County Jail on a $200,000 bond.

Anyone who believes they may have been scammed by Hughes is asked to call troopers at the St. Ignace post at 906-643-7582.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
