Police warn of Copper Country scams

CALUMET, MI--   State Police from the Calumet Post are asking people to be aware of two scams making the rounds in the area.

The first involves a phone call from someone who says the victim has won a lottery and must send money to South Africa to get the prize.

The second entails a friend request on Facebook.  One resident said they’d received a request from someone who was already a friend.  When they accepted the second request they were directed to an alleged government program that’s offering money.  The resident contacted their friend and found the second request was fake.

State Police say if something being offered seems too good to be true, it likely is.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
