Houghton County Sheriff receives tip about escaped inmate

HOUGHTON, MI--   An escapee from the Houghton County Jail may be back in the area.

The Sheriff’s Office received a tip Thursday that John Saatio, 35, was seen walking on US-41 near Michigan Tech’s campus.

After searching the Houghton/Hancock areas deputies and local police were unable to locate a subject matching Saatio’s description.

A detective interviewed the eyewitness and said there’s a high possibility the man they had seen was Saatio, who escaped from custody last June 19 while returning to jail from a court appearance.

Officials say the subject was seen wearing a black ball cap, black jacket, blue jeans, and glasses.  His face was apparently thinner and he had a slight beard.

Anyone who sees a man matching Saatio’s description is asked to call 911 or the Houghton County Sheriff at 482-0055.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
