Man charged in 2015 Forsyth Township crash

FORSYTH TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Forsyth Township man has been arrested on charges connected to a traffic accident last summer.  

Township Police arrested Dave Nykanen, 31, Tuesday following a six-month investigation into the July 25 accident on M-35 near County Road 557.  They say a vehicle Nykanen was driving left the roadway and rolled over, ejecting a female passenger.  She was pinned under the car and suffered serious injuries. 

Nykanen is charged with operating while intoxicated, causing serious injury; operating while intoxicated, third offense; operating while license suspended, revoked, or denied, causing serious injury; and lying to a police officer. 

The charges are punishable by up to 17 years in prison and a $5,000 fine. 

Township Police were assisted by the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office and Forsyth Township Fire and EMS.  

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
