Information released in Escanaba beating case

ESCANABA, MI--   Two people are in custody in connection with the beating of a man in Escanaba.

Early Saturday morning the Escanaba Department of Public Safety responded to a 911 call saying a man had been assaulted on the 1200 block of 1st Avenue South.  Three witnesses heard someone yelling for help as they walked from a local bar.  They found a man covered in blood.

Responding officers immediately rendered first aid.  The victim was taken to OSF St. Francis, then airlifted to UP Health System Marquette for treatment.  The 31-year old suffered head trauma, a fractured cheek bone, and a laceration to his face.  The injuries were reportedly inflicted by the rounded end of a hatchet.

Investigation led to the arrest of a 19-year-old male from Kansas and a 19-year-old female from Escanaba.  The man is charged with attempted murder and the woman with felonious assault.  Both remain lodged at the Delta County Jail.

Investigation into the case continues, and additional charges may be forthcoming.
