Inmate who killed 2 was facing major charges

ST. JOSEPH, MI (AP)--   Records show a jail inmate who killed two bailiffs at a southwestern Michigan courthouse was locked up on major felony charges.

State police records say Larry Darnell Gordon was charged in April with criminal sexual conduct, assault with a dangerous weapon and kidnapping.

Authorities say the 44-year-old inmate overpowered a sheriff's deputy at the Berrien County courthouse Monday, took his gun and killed two bailiffs. The deputy and a woman were injured.

Officers subsequently killed Gordon.

Sheriff Paul Bailey says Gordon's hands were cuffed in front when he disarmed Deputy James Atterberry Jr. during a fight. Bailey says Gordon was always cooperative in jail.

The courthouse in St. Joseph, 100 miles northeast of Chicago, will reopen Wednesday.
