MARQUETTE, MI-- In one day Northern Michigan University’s head hockey coach found himself out of a job, then arrested on fraud charges.
Friday afternoon NMU Director of Athletics Forrest Karr announced coach Walt Kyle’s contract would not be renewed after 15 seasons at the helm. Officials will initiate a national search for his replacement.
Later the same day the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office issued a release stating Kyle was arrested on a warrant for residential mortgage fraud, $100,000 or less and forgery of documents affecting real property. The 60-year-old Kyle posted bond and was released.
The warrant was authorized after an 11-month investigation. Kyle is accused of committing fraud and forgery at River Valley Bank while obtaining a mortgage back in 2014.
His arraignment is set for April 3 in Marquette County District Court.
