Telephone scam hits Ishpeming

ISHPEMING, MI--   The Ishpeming Police Department says a “spoofing” scam may be making the rounds.

Spoofing happens when a caller falsifies the information on your caller ID display to disguise their identity. It’s often used in an attempt to trick someone into giving away personal information so it can be used in fraudulent activity or sold illegally.

Officers say Monday an Ishpeming resident received a call saying she’d won a cruise. Her phone’s caller ID indicated the call came from the City of Ishpeming.

Anyone who spoofs with the intent to defraud, cause harm, or wrongly obtain anything of value faces penalties of up to $10,000 for each violation.

Police remind residents never to give out any personal information from an unsolicited caller.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
