Police find pipe bomb in L'Anse man's vehicle

HOUGHTON COUNTY, MI--   A L’Anse man is jailed, after a pipe bomb was discovered in his vehicle Friday.

State Police from the Calumet Post say the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. on Denton Road near US-41 in Houghton County. A vehicle driven by a 59-year-old Chassell woman was stopped, waiting to turn left onto the highway, when it was rear-ended by a vehicle driven by a 19-year-old man from L’Anse.

Troopers say no injuries were reported, but the man’s vehicle was uninsured and had an improper license plate. During the investigation a state police K-9 indicated the presence of narcotics. A search uncovered drug paraphernalia and a pipe bomb. The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad was called in to defuse the device.

The driver was arrested for possession of a dangerous weapon, no insurance, and improper registration plate. He remains lodged in the Houghton County Jail.
