Iron Mountain officer shoots, kills multiple-crime suspect

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   A suspect is dead and an officer injured, following a shooting in Dickinson County Monday.

Around 8:45 a.m. Iron Mountain Police were notified a truck was driving recklessly near the Boss Snow Plow plant. It was then seen driving onto Systems Control property. The suspect truck was located, empty, in the Systems Control parking lot. Police discovered it and a handgun had been stolen from a garage on the north side of town.

Believing an armed suspect had fled into the woods, Bay College West and several businesses went on lockdown.

At 10:23 police learned a car had been stolen from the Systems Control parking lot before they’d even arrived. Twelve minutes later officers were told a man driving the car had tried to rob a woman at gunpoint at a home in east Kingsford.

Three minutes later an Iron Mountain officer saw the car and gave chase for about a minute until the suspect vehicle crashed on a private drive off of Skidmore Drive. The 20-year-old suspect and officer exchanged fire. Both were taken to Dickinson County Healthcare System. The officer was treated for a head wound and released. The suspect died of his injuries.

The Michigan State Police is investigating the officer involved shooting. The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the attempted armed robbery in East Kingsford, and the Iron Mountain Police Department is investigating the stolen vehicles and stolen gun complaints.
