MTU student arrested on child porn charges

HOUGHTON, MI--   A Houghton man has been arrested by Michigan State Police for possessing child sexually abusive material.

The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force says 27-year-old Nathaniel Shapiro—a Michigan Tech student—had been uploading the material on campus since May. Task force members worked closely with campus police and staff and the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department on the investigation.

Shapiro was arrested on campus August 20 and charged with three counts of possession of child sexually abusive material and three counts of using a computer to commit a crime. Officials say Shapiro was found in possession of a large number of digital devices.

He remains lodged in the Houghton County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
