ISHPEMING, MI--   Ishpeming police have arrested a woman for child abuse.

Just after 10 a.m. Wednesday officers received a call that a child was locked in a non-running vehicle behind the Salvation Army on East Division Street.

A Salvation Army employee said the vehicle was in the parking lot and one of its doors was open. When the employee closed it, they heard a child crying in the back seat. Closing the door locked the vehicle, and officers had to break a window to open it.

The child was alert but cold. She was warmed up in a patrol vehicle then taken to UPHS-Bell. The 2-year-old was turned over to Child Protective Services after treatment for exposure.

About half an hour after the initial call the child’s mother appeared at the scene. She told police she was at a friend’s, but wouldn’t give specific information. She was arrested and lodged at the Marquette County Jail.

The Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the case for child abuse charges.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
