Woman killed in the Soo

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   A 27-year-old woman is the victim of a homicide in Sault Ste. Marie.

City Police were dispatched Tuesday at 9:53 p.m. to a residence on the 800 block of Minneapolis Street on a report a man and a woman had both been cut. The male subject had left the scene on foot and was injured.

When officers arrived they found a deceased woman in the house. She was identified as 27-year-old Haley Anne Smith of the Soo.

Police found the man a couple of blocks away and took him into custody. He had a severe laceration on his arm and was transported to War Memorial Hospital. His name is being withheld, pending arraignment.

The Michigan State Police Crime Lab from Grayling is assisting with the investigation.

No other details have been released at this time.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
