Another CO attacked at Marquette prison

MARQUETTE, MI— The Michigan State Police is investigating an assault on a corrections officer at Marquette Branch Prison last week.

Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz says it happened Monday just after 8 p.m. Three officers were on the gallery in the maximum-security housing unit, letting prisoners out for showers. When one of the prisoners was let out, he began stabbing a female officer in the head with a weapon. The other two officers at the scene subdued the inmate.

An ambulance took the wounded officer to UPHS-Marquette for treatment. She was later released.

State Police were called in to investigate the incident. Gautz says MDOC officials hope it will result in charges against the suspect inmate.

The prisoner was transferred to another maximum-security facility.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
