Soo student, 14, in custody for making threat towards high school

Nicole Walton

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A Sault Area High School student is in custody for making a threat of violence.

Tuesday afternoon the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department was notified of a threatening message written on a bathroom wall. It suggested acts of violence with a firearm towards those at the high school.

Investigation led to a 14-year-old suspect, who was taken into custody Tuesday night. The suspect is lodged at the Sault Tribe Detention Facility on a charge of making a terrorist threat—punishable for adults by up to 20 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

Threats against Michigan schools have skyrocketed since the fatal shooting at Oxford High School in November. Sault Police and the Chippewa County Prosecutor’s Office say they will investigate and prosecute anyone and everyone who makes, allows or facilitates threats against students, staff or school buildings.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
