Houghton County Undersheriff charged with driving under the influence

TRAVERSE CITY, MI— Houghton County’s undersheriff has been placed on temporary leave after he was arrested in Traverse City.

WLUC-TV reports Kevin Coppo was taken into custody for operating a vehicle under the influence. He’s accused of driving a truck owned by the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department into a parked vehicle in the Great Wolf Lodge parking lot. Coppo apparently refused a preliminary breath test.

Grand Traverse County District Court says a formal trial has been requested for Coppo, who was released on bail.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office has placed Coppo on temporary leave. Sergeant Jon Giachino has been appointed undersheriff in his absence.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
