SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A Sault Sainte Marie man has been sentenced to 35 to 60 years in prison, after he was convicted of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Shawn Vert, 35, was arrested in August 2020 after he sexually assaulted a female relative while she was in an unconscious state. The victim completed a rape kit at War Memorial Hospital, and evidence uncovered Vert’s DNA.
Jurors found Vert guilty in a three-day trial last October. He was sentenced Thursday in 50th Circuit Court.
Vert has eight prior felony convictions, including a separate criminal sexual conduct conviction, distributing sexually explicit material to children, and multiple Sex Offender Registration Act violations.
