Thieves steal gas, spill fuel in Keweenaw County lake

KEWEENAW COUNTY, MI— The Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office is looking for the people responsible for stealing gasoline and creating a fuel spill on the east shore of Lac La Belle last week.

Late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning someone cut the fuel lines on a mostly empty 275-gallon fuel tank used in a commercial fishing operation. It appears they were siphoning gas into containers and spilling it on the ground.

Deputies say whatever was left in the tank was left to run into the lake through the cut line. It’s categorized as a small spill and mitigation efforts are in place.

Officials say residents heard a large truck idling at the lake around 4 a.m. Thursday. Anyone with information regarding the suspects or vehicle involved is asked to call the Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office at 906-337-0528.
