DICKINSON COUNTY, MI— Police in Michigan are seeking extradition of a Wisconsin man who pointed a rifle at conservation officers he was fleeing in Dickinson County.
On the afternoon of July 22, a DNR officer saw a man driving an ATV with an expired license on Upper Pine Creek Road. When the officer stopped the subject, he noticed the man had two shotguns in a case secured to the equipment rack and a rifle partially covered by a blanket.
The ATV driver lacked ID, and agreed to have the officer follow him to a relative’s camp. A second conservation officer arrived to assist.
As the subject started driving to the alleged family member’s camp, he attempted to flee the officers. At one point during the pursuit, the man pointed the rifle back at the police. Farther along the road, the subject stood up and shot himself under his jaw.
The man was airlifted to a trauma center in Wisconsin.
Michigan State Police determined items in the man’s possession had recently been stolen from nearby camps. More property and a stolen vehicle have also been recovered.
The 30-year-old Wausau man is charged with discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle, fleeing and eluding, felonious assault, and felony firearms. He’s also wanted on multiple outstanding warrants in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
