Baraga COs injured in inmate attack

BARAGA, MI— Several corrections officers were injured in an attack by prisoners at the Baraga Correctional Facility Thursday.

The Michigan Department of Corrections says the officers were monitoring Level V yard activities when five prisoners started assaulting them. They threw closed-fist punches to the officers’ heads and necks. Additional staff were called in to assist and help subdue the attack through the use of tasers and chemical agents.

Four staff were sent to the hospital—two with serious injuries. All were treated and released. Two officers returned to work the same day.

The prisoners who led the attack were detained and transported to other maximum-security facilities.

Michigan State Police were notified and members of the MSP Emergency Response Team were brought to the facility to assist.
