Dickinson County man apprehended for child sexually abusive activity in Munising

Alger County Sheriff's Office

MUNISING, MI— A Kingsford man has been arrested in Alger County for trying to have sex with a minor.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office says Matthew Cooley, 39, was arrested March 10 following an undercover operation.

An officer posed on social media sites as a 15-year-old girl with intentions of engaging in sexual intercourse. Cooley allegedly communicated interest and traveled to the Munising area to meet the minor.

When Cooley arrived at the predetermined meeting site, he was immediately arrested.

Cooley is charged with engaging in child sexually abusive activity and using a computer to commit a crime. He’s also charged with possession of meth, following a search of his vehicle.

He’s currently out on bond, awaiting his preliminary hearing.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
