Iron County, WI bank robbed, suspect arrested

MERCER, WI— A man has been arrested for robbing an Iron County, Wisconsin bank.

Monday around 1:40 p.m., Emergency Dispatch received a 911 call that someone in a mask had just robbed the Associated Bank in Mercer. A description of the vehicle and its direction of travel was given to deputies.

An officer patrolling in Mercer immediately recognized the vehicle and followed it south on U.S. Highway 51. When the suspect vehicle entered Vilas County, the Iron County deputy coordinated with Vilas County deputies regarding the man’s location.

When the additional officers arrived, they tried to stop the suspect vehicle, but the man fled at a high rate of speed. He tried to turn onto Chippewa Forest Road, but the driver lost control and the vehicle rolled over several times.

The suspect was taken to Aspirus Howard Young Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries then lodged in the Iron County Jail on robbery charges.

The Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation is assisting in the case.
