PARADISE, MI— A volunteer firefighter has been charged with arson, following a Chippewa County structure fire.

The fire was reported Saturday evening at a gift shop in the town of Paradise. Members of the Whitefish Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s office began an investigation into the blaze—the third one in the area over the past few months. Officials used surveillance video from a gas station across the street from the gift shop to develop a suspect.

They arrested Joseph Halder, 35, as he fought the gift shop fire.

Halder is charged with third-degree arson. He remains lodged in the Chippewa County Correctional Facility on a $200,000 bond.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
