Two arrested for smuggling meth into Chippewa County

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— Two Sault Sainte Marie residents have been arrested on meth-related charges.

Detectives from TRIDENT were investigating a man for smuggling meth from downstate into Chippewa County. On November 20th, a traffic stop was conducted on the suspect vehicle. Officers executed a search warrant and discovered about a quarter-pound of meth inside.

Gary Matheny, 42, and Halie Closs, 34, are both charged with possession with intent to deliver meth and conspiracy to deliver meth. Matheny is also charged as a habitual offender.

Both remain lodged in the Chippewa County Correctional Facility.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
