Family members of Hancock homicide victim arrested in Iowa

Cerro Gordo County Sheriff's Office

CLEAR LAKE, IA— Two people have been arrested in Iowa in connection with the death of a Hancock Township man Tuesday.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office says deputies conducted a wellbeing check at a house on Salo Road. They found Alvin Kempainen, 87, dead with a gunshot wound to the head.

Investigation led to the identification of family members as persons of interest. They include Margaret Kempainen, 50, Jacob Kempainen, 20, and a 16-year-old, who will not be identified.

All three were found driving south on I-35 in Minnesota, then stopped around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Clear Lake, Iowa. Margaret and Jacob Kempainen were taken into custody and lodged at the Cerro Gordo County Jail.

Houghton County officials are seeking their extradition back to Michigan on homicide charges.
