Accused Chippewa County arsonist charged with setting more fires

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A Chippewa County man arrested in November in connection with a structure fire in Paradise now faces charges in two other incidents.

Joseph Halder, 35, joined the Whitefish Township Volunteer Fire Department last summer. He was arrested for arson as he fought the fire at a Paradise gift shop on November 11th.

Halder was also a suspect in two other fires in the area.

On Wednesday, he was arrested and arraigned in 91st District Court on two additional arson charges. One charge stems from a structure fire that happened in Paradise on October 5th of 2023. The second stems from a structure fire which occurred off of M-123 south of Paradise on November 5th of last year.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
