Manistique juvenile accused of stealing 2 cars in one day

MANISTIQUE, MI— A 14-year-old boy is in custody for stealing two vehicles in the Manistique area.

Manistique Public Safety officers were notified Tuesday that the boy was going door to door, asking for help to get his car unstuck from a snowmobile trail. The boy fled once he knew police were called.

Officers discovered the stuck vehicle was taken without the owner’s knowledge. They suspected it was linked to a voluntarily missing juvenile reported to Public Safety earlier that day.

Around 11 p.m., officers saw a suspicious vehicle on US-2 near the city limits. They found the 14-year-old driving it and discovered that vehicle had also been taken without the owner’s permission.

The boy was turned over to Schoolcraft County Probate Court for holding.

The investigation is ongoing.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
