Car theft suspect leads police on chase, gets tased, in Gogebic County

GOGEBIC COUNTY, MI— The suspect in a stolen vehicle case had to be tased after they led Gogebic County officers on a chase and rammed two vehicles.

Sunday around 11:30 a.m., Ironwood Public Safety was notified a vehicle was stolen from a gas pump at a local convenience store. A Sheriff’s deputy found the vehicle at a Bessemer business, but the suspect rammed the deputy’s patrol car, disabling it.

A Public Safety unit saw the vehicle on US-2 heading into Ironwood, and as the officer passed the suspect, the driver accelerated into the city. A responding Michigan State Police trooper witnessed the suspect vehicle crash into another vehicle at the intersection of Luxmore and Cloverland Drive, causing substantial damage to both.

The suspect fled on foot, was confronted by several civilians, and tried to steal another car at a nearby convenience store, but Public Safety officers disabled it.

The suspect again fled on foot across four lanes of traffic, but another civilian caused the suspect to change course and run onto US-2. After several warnings and opportunities to comply with officer’s commands, the suspect was tased.
