Man charged for threatening Ishpeming hiker with gun

ISHPEMING, MI— An Oklahoma man has been charged with assaulting a hiker in Ishpeming.

City Police say last Thursday morning, a man and a woman confronted the hiker about trespassing on a trail near the old Ishpeming Fish Hatchery. The man allegedly showed the hiker a gun. When they investigated the incident later, officers found firearms in the abandoned building.

The suspect—24-year-old Alexander Weems, originally from Oklahoma—was arrested and charged Friday with assault with a dangerous weapon and felony firearms. It’s unknown if the woman who was with him will be charged.

A probable cause conference is set for July 18 and a preliminary exam for July 24 in Marquette District Court.
