Email scam hitting Houghton-area residents

HOUGHTON, MI— The City of Houghton Police Department has received multiple reports of a scam targeting area residents.

People are receiving emails with a PDF attached. It demands money be sent in the form of Bitcoin to an anonymous party.

Each email is personalized in terms of the victim’s name, address, and phone number. Anyone who receives a suspicious email should not open it or act on the details within it.

Police say at no point should you send money, gift cards, or Bitcoin to the other party.

If you receive such an email, contact your local police department.
