Ishpeming man accused of attacking another man with meat mallet

ISHPEMING, MI— An Ishpeming man has been charged with assault with intent to murder, after he allegedly attacked another man with a meat tenderizing mallet.

The Ishpeming Police Department says the incident happened on New Year’s Eve. Officers were dispatched to 551 Jasper Street around 2:40 a.m. on a report of an assault. A 56-year-old Ishpeming man had been hit in the head with the meat tenderizer.

Police arrested Zachary Lewis, 30. He was also treated by medical staff for a self-inflicted injury. Once he received treatment, Lewis was lodged in the Marquette County Jail.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for January 16 and a preliminary exam for January 23 in Marquette County District Court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
