Redford woman arrested for giving drugs to Chippewa County prisoner

KINCHELOE, MI— A downstate woman has been arrested for trying to smuggle drugs into the Chippewa Correctional Facility in Kincheloe.

Michigan State Police from the Soo Post say on January 11, personnel with the Michigan Department of Corrections became suspicious after they observed unusual behavior by a prisoner during a visitation.

Surveillance footage revealed Frances Ramirez-Huerta, 41, of Redford had concealed items in her waistband and given them to an inmate. A search of the prisoner uncovered 140 suboxone strips, 7 grams of marijuana flower, and two SIM cards for cellular devices.

Ramirez-Huerta was arrested and charged with controlled substance-creation/delivery of an analogue, controlled substance-delivery/manufacture of marijuana, maintaining a drug house, furnishing contraband to a prisoner in prison, and furnishing a cell phone to a prisoner.

She was lodged in the Chippewa County Jail on a $1,000 bond. Her next court hearing is set for January 27.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
