Police say Soo shooting was result of landlord-tenant dispute

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— The Sault Ste. Marie Police Department has released details of a fatal shooting in the city on Tuesday.

Officers and members of the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department were dispatched around 8:30 a.m. to Wood Creek Manor on a report of multiple gunshots fired. Upon arrival, they found a man and a woman lying in a hallway with gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

To secure and preserve the scene, residents in two of the building’s wings were temporarily relocated with assistance from the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Unit. The Eastern Upper Peninsula Transportation Authority took many of the residents to the Hearthside Assisted Living Facility as a temporary gathering place until lodging could be arranged.

Multiple search warrants were executed during the investigation. The Michigan State Police Crime Lab assisted in processing the scene.

Investigation determined the woman was a manager at Wood Creek Manor and the man was a tenant. They apparently had been involved in a dispute and the man shot and killed the woman before taking his own life.

Also assisting in the incident were Chippewa County Central Dispatch, the Sault Tribe Police Department, and U.S. Border Patrol.
