Assault of woman leads to arrest of Gwinn man on several felony charges

WEST BRANCH TOWNSHIP, MI— A Gwinn man was arrested on multiple felonies Tuesday, following an assault in West Branch Township.

Monday around 11:10 p.m., troopers from the Negaunee Post and Eighth District Headquarters responded to a report of domestic violence at a residence on Bomarc Street. They found a 31-year-old man had physically assaulted his significant other, who managed to escape the house. The man reportedly had a firearm.

Troopers encountered the suspect on the home’s porch and issued commands, but the man ran back into the house.

The MSP Emergency Support Team responded to the scene to assist. The suspect eventually complied with troopers and exited the home. Police took him into custody and seized a pistol. Officials don’t believe the firearm was discharged during the incident, but do think it was used during the assault.

The suspect was arrested for 1st-degree home invasion, assault with a dangerous weapon, felony firearms, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, aggravated domestic violence, and resisting/obstructing a police officer.

The victim is reported to be in stable condition at UPHS-Marquette.

The suspect remains lodged in the Marquette County Jail. His name has not been released, pending arraignment.

Assisting in the incident were the Forsyth Township Police Department, UPHS EMS, and Forsyth Township EMS.
