Luce County suspect charged with 2 counts of child abuse

NEWBERRY, MI— A Newberry man has been arraigned on charges he abused a 5-week-old infant.

Roy Metcalf, 25, is charged with two counts of first-degree child abuse.

In June 2024, Children’s Protective Services was notified by Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids of suspected abuse following the hospital’s assessment of the baby girl. She was initially brought to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital, transferred to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, then taken to Grand Rapids. Doctors diagnosed a fractured femur and subdural hemorrhaging.

Metcalf was released on a personal recognizance bond.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for May 15 in Luce County District Court.
