Reckless ATV driver in Ishpeming wanted by police

ISHPEMING, MI— Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post are searching for a man who drove an ATV recklessly in Ishpeming last Friday.

While westbound on Greenwood Street near Willow Street around 5:40 p.m., a trooper saw a black, racing-style ATV traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed. The ATV passed a pickup on the right shoulder, causing dirt and rocks to be kicked up.

When the trooper activated the patrol car’s lights and tried to stop the ATV, the driver took off. Recognizing that the subject was intentionally fleeing, the trooper deactivated his lights and stopped pursuit.

A short time later, the trooper saw a man matching the suspect’s description walking along the trail near North Washington Street. When the man saw the patrol car, he fled on foot into a wooded area, where the ATV was apparently hidden. He restarted the machine and fled the scene.

The driver is described as a white male wearing a black shirt and a blue motocross-style helmet. Anyone with information regarding the identity of the suspect or the whereabouts of the ATV is asked to contact the Negaunee Post at 906-475-9922.
