DMV text scam hitting drivers

MARQUETTE, MI— Drivers throughout the state are being affected by a text scam.

The messages are allegedly from the Department of Motor Vehicles stating the person has an outstanding traffic ticket. The messages look real and appear legitimate, as they add penalty dates, fake codes, and a link that appears to be an official DMV website.

Police say be skeptical of any message that creates urgency or panic. Do not click any link or reply. If you are concerned the message might be real, contact the DMV office using the official website or a trusted phone number. Never use the contact information provided in the suspicious text.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
